I noticed a lot of teachers asking questions that seem to be asking for students' opinions/thoughts. (Ex: "Why do you want to learn English?", "What do you want to learn?", "What are some things you struggle with when learning?", etc) I see a lot of questions about learning the language from the student's perspective. I do think these are great questions and I did the same thing on the Vietnamese page before, but a student reached out to me with their answers because they can't answer questions on this community questions page. I just wanted to point that out in case teachers weren't aware and wanted to get feedback from students

Yes they cant. And most of the time is teachers answering so as to be able to get attention from students. The more you answer. As the student browse through they are able to notice you.

It can also be used before verbs related to emotions, like 喜欢 (xǐhuān, like)，讨厌 (tǎoyàn, hate)，羡慕 (xiànmù, envy).

Hi Lisa, I think you meant to put this under the Chinese questions page. This is a great explanation though! I learned Mandarin throughout high school and college. Initially, I thought it was an interesting language to learn in high school, and coming from a Vietnamese background, I thought it would pretty easy to pick up. I wanted to continue learning the language in college so that I could become trilingual. I majored in International Business with an emphasis in Chinese/Asia Pacific, so I studied Asian studies and Mandarin. It's a great additional language to know in the business field.

Working with students of varying levels of participation can be a challenge. A crucial component of teaching is the ability to adjust to various personalities and learning preferences. Kindly feel free to discuss how you engage reluctant students in group projects, games, or role-playing by using different techniques.

As someone who was not an active participator in classes when I was younger and who has worked with shyer students, the key is not to pressure them. While participating in discussions can be important and show a student's understanding, not everyone is comfortable, some may even have anxiety. As a teacher, it's important to be encourage without pushing the student too much. It's also a lot easier to start small. Have students discuss in small groups and slowly work towards encouraging them to participate in whole-class discussions. It's also important to set clear expectations in the beginning of class that your classroom is a judgement-free space and enforce that students are kind and respectful to others. This way, when time comes for discussions, students who are more shy/unwilling to participate feel more comfortable to do so because they know that their peers are not judging them. The teacher should reflect this behavior as well and set an example.

Ask yourself a question and write down an answer or little story about the question. Use the new words you are learning. Read this aloud. A fun and creative way to practice. I did this when I learned French because the tests always had an essay.

Practice writing daily. Making mistakes is part of learning, so students shouldn't worry about them and just focus on getting words out. This helps with fluency and just being able to write in general. As students improve their skills, they can start focusing more on accuracy of their grammar/spelling/word choice. The key is to practice a lot. It's important to practice writing in different topics as well. Reading also improves writing as it exposes people to different writing styles, helps them learn about different usages/context of words, and expands their vocabulary.
