I learnt Brazilian Portuguese In the South of Brazil. I personally find the accent from the South is very Spanish influenced, and has a clearer tone, compared to the Portuguese further North, like in Rio. Portuguese from Portugal has a very Germanic influence, with a gutteral sound in my opinion.
