  • How would you handle an extremely "Shy" student?, that would look away from you during a lesson.

Would you continue to teach? How would you handle the situation?.

    Best answer

First, it is important to find the source of shyness. Some students are just "camera shy." If this is the case, ask them if they would like to turn off the camera. Some students are shy because of their mistakes. If so, ask them if they want to be corrected immediately or after the lesson in their private chat. There may be many reasons for shyness, but the most important thing is not to make a point of their shyness.

  • How do you teach Pronunciation?

Shadowing Phonetics Using Articulatory organs etc.

    Best answer

I think the first thing we should do is learn phonetics. It is important to learn the place where and how sounds are articulated. Make listening exercises and give students the chance to repeat it as much as possible. Never interrupt them when talking. Only give feedback after they’re done talking.

  • Would you advise your students to learn informal English in order to talk to native speakers?

Dear fellow tutors, Read this for further clarifications. In some cases, students only learn academic and formal English, which may not be put to good use when talking to native speakers outside the parameters of their "classrooms". Now that we are online teachers, would learning informal English be a recommendation for your students? Do you think that it is a good way to express themselves when outside their learning zones? Perhaps, would you consider learning idioms a good choice for them? Leave your answers, and I will check them out later. Happy tutoring. Abdelkhalek Sfaihi (tutor)

Dear colleague, Thanks a lot for your question. I'm really pleased to have the opportunity to discuss with a colleague such an important topic and such others. Being an online teacher doesn't offer you many opportunities to talk about your work with others, which I consider to be really useful and interesting. I've always missed that here. In my opinion, English should be taught in as many varieties as possible. So, knowing informal English is necessary , even if we talk about slang or a register denotibg a poor prestigious English it is important to know it. Of course the student should very clearly know the meaning and the difference of speaking in one or another way because we all know it may be relevant. Have a good one!

  • What are you all time favorite Christmas movies?.

I love the Home Alone movies

  • I believe that "Role-play", is a very effective teaching strategy to keep students engaged.

I think it's very effective especially with children. What are your views?.

    Best answer

Role-plays can be effective on the condition that learners are not asked to memorize anything. If so, it'll turn into an intimidating and also dull experience. Students must be free to construct their own sentences with the themes given.

  • How do you usually reply to your students when responding correctly to your questions?
    Best answer

Hi Abdo, Rewarding (or acknowledging as the case may be) progress is as important as giving lessons. So at every opportunity, the student's effort is acknowledged even when they are wrong. But whenever they are right, do not fail to acknowledge and praise the effort and/or the outcome. You just have to understand your student enough to know exactly what amount of "praise" is right to keep them motivated. Hope this makes sense?
