Great question ! There are a few answers to your question. (1) Yes, mankind is still used these days, even though HUMANITY or even PEOPLE would be better. (2) MAN (and mankind) is used to talk about people, but this is not used very much these days. For example, when the astronauts landed on the moon back in the year 1969, Neil Armstrong said: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." (3) MAN is also used when people are talking like a cool dude. "Hey man, whats up?" Even females use it . . . but even though, the cook thing now is to use "guys" for both male and female. In reality, guys = male gals = female
