  • Have you created any innovative teaching methods that you feel have been a hit with your students?

I've been doing some thinking over the past few months, and despite having been a teacher for 8 years and feeling confident in my teaching ability, I've always been open to constructive criticism or picking up new methodologies from other teachers. This got me thinking about how, at this stage, I would be able to improve my teaching methods organically (as opposed to starting a new course or something along those lines), and after doing a fair bit of research, something that bugged me was how similar a lot of the ideas were online. This left me with a couple of questions (with no right or wrong answers; I just want to open a discussion). 1: Do you think there's a place for innovation in terms of teaching techniques and methodology in today's learning environments? 2: Have you ever innovated any new methods or techniques that you feel proud of and that have seemingly had a positive impact on your students? I'm interested to hear other people's perspectives!

  • What do you do for a living besides being an ESL teacher?
  • What are some strategies when the teacher does not speak the students’ native language?

Some good ways to facilitate communication is through using body language (act it out), pictures or visual aids and by using simple, straightforward English spoken in a natural voice but at a slower rate.

I am an English native speaker, but I also teach Vietnamese language for adult foreigners (which is my second language, though I am a non-native Vietnamese speaker). Through a lot of experimentation I found that for me, what works best, is focusing on the techniques/methodology/learning resources & breakthrough moments that took my Vietnamese to the next level as opposed to a traditional ESL structure. As a result of this I have observed my students becoming more motivated to keep studying and often they are able to modify my learning methods based on their preferred style of learning to find an efficient strategy for themselves. Having said that, I think children or young learners will benefit from more predictably-structured learning.
