My native language is Spanish but my husband is South African. In his case conversation practice and movies in Spanish are the best help. He also used Duolingo for a while to gain some vocabulary until he started with online classes.

Well duo lingo is a great app. Also if you want to do that by yourself remember that you should spent 15 minutes a day on studying. I would use podcast, grammar books, Netflix and songs. You can find very useful materiales in the web (Pinterest, YouTube). Remember that the most importante thing is to practise everyday...no matter how much time...just a little bit every single day.
First of all (if I'm not in any spanish-speaking country) I would try to learn the basics, there's a lot of online tools and resources, and in the meantime it would be essential to listen to some music, read some books and watch some films o tv series, even if you don't understand them. Little by little, you are going to catch some words and structures. Un saludo!
