  • English is essential if you want to have any chance of decent career in nearly any field. Why? It comes down to just a couple of things. The world wide web was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee a British computer scientist, and as such the language of the web is English. All computer software languages use English so knowledge of the language is vital. The biggest empire the world has ever known, was the British Empire which meant that for nearly all of the UK's colonial subjects English was the official language spoken, one of the consequences of this was that someone born in India for instance, was able to communicate with someone born in say, South Africa. After the end of empire, English was kept as an official language by many of the old colonies and mandates, meaning trade could flourish, as everyone could understand each other. As trade developed, so globalization emerged and those hungry for socio-economic development HAD to learn this truly international language.
