By late 18th century, British Empire had spread English through its colonies and geopolitically dominated areas everywhere, which contributed to its importance. It was adopted in North America, parts of Africa, Oceania, and many other regions. In the 20th century, the growing economic and cultural influence of United States also contributed to the growth of this language. Nowadays, English is the most widely-taught second language in schools all around the globe, and it is used not only for in person commerce, business, art, politics, or tourism, but also online communication & social media.
