If the person is at an A1 level, it’s great to start with some fun and basic reading materials. Anything that focuses on phonics and rhyming words works well! I really enjoy the Jolly Phonics collection, and then moving on to Jolly Grammar is a nice next step.
I would start with short stories such as Peter Pan, Pinocchio or The Wonderful Wizard of Oz :)

For A1, as the learner's understanding of the language is highly limited, it's better to start with short reading comprehension passages. If the learner is interested in story books, I'd recommend these: Alice in Wonderland The Little Prince Gulliver's Travels And two authors that my learners love a lot: Sudha Murthy ('s collections of short stories) Salman Rushdie

This has been one of the challenges I personally struggled with when I first started teaching online. First of all, its vital to know your students, mostly kids. Know what they like and try by all means to direct lessons towards the topics that they enjoy the most. But its still possible that a child might be bored even though you have selected a topic they like. So in this case I use visuals a lot. I mean children learn most with their eyes. I normally start off by lessons with song videos to awaken their interest and excitement for learning
