•I usually use direct measures such as assignments, tests, reports, essays, research projects, case study analysis, and rubrics for oral and other performances. •I think of checking understanding as an additional step in the teaching process. Basically it involves checking if students retain information while I'm still teaching, not afterwards. It often takes the form of a short formative assessment, but does not require a paper-and-pencil assessment.
