•I usually use direct measures such as assignments, tests, reports, essays, research projects, case study analysis, and rubrics for oral and other performances. •I think of checking understanding as an additional step in the teaching process. Basically it involves checking if students retain information while I'm still teaching, not afterwards. It often takes the form of a short formative assessment, but does not require a paper-and-pencil assessment.

I like to check in with my students about how they’ve been since our last class. This not only gives us a chance to practice small talk but also allows me to tailor the session to their individual experiences. E.g. Before we jump into today’s lesson, how was your weekend?
