Students, what are some traits of a GREAT TUTOR?

I am not a student, but I will answer it because I was a student before. I believe, that a great tutor is someone who is sensitive to the needs of the learners and someone who has a skill and knowledge in the subject that he/she is teaching.

 A tutor who can create a conducive environment for a student to be comfortable to make  mistakes.

Knows how to listen (this is a skill that can't be taught; either the tutor can or they can't)

How about being more of a friend than a tutor?

Hi, I'm John & I've been a teacher since 1995 (& a tutor for the previous 4 years when I went to university). I'm a world traveler & I now work as a freelance writer, author, poet, & online teacher. I chose this life because I love meeting people & I wouldn't change any of it.

How I teach each class depends on the student's goals. I can teach speaking & pronunciation, vocabulary & idioms; I sometimes teach grammar. If there's something specific you'd like to study, let me know & we can talk about how I can help you.

My lessons are usually informal, unless a student asks me to teach intensive English classes (which I have done). I generally limit my speaking to asking leading questions, to support & encourage my students speaking efforts; if our conversations are topic based (for example, movies), I may talk slightly more to share information, but my primary goal is to get you talking & provide feedback on your successes and your weaknesses.

I like teaching tongue twisters, because they're fun for both of us & good for improving pronunciation. I don't teach writing skills, though, just speaking. If you'd like to work on improving your reading & listening skills, we could do that as well (many students struggle with listening).

My students will experience enjoyable classes and learn practical,  useful English.  While correct grammar is important, students are interested in speaking English. If all they know are grammar rules (which often have so many exceptions they are useless), then they will be unable to have a conversation in English. 

Take plurality.  Sure, "eye" becomes "eyes". But "child" becomes "children ", and "woman"  becomes "women". Not much sense in learning rules for plurality.

My teaching style is centered around my students and their needs. I always listen to what my student has to say in terms of how they want to learn. I then plan around that, but my lesson planning is always flexible and can be changed depending on my students needs, or even their needs for a season. 

In my classroom, we also watch videos in different accents, listen to podcasts, have commentary about current affairs and influential people, do role play, and most importantly, we focus on vocabulary a lot. 

I always send my students lessons in advance, so that they get an opportunity to go through the lesson and take note of what they would like clarity on when we go live. This is vey important for me and I do not compromise on that. After the lesson, I also send feedback to my students for their revision.
