I have a student who uses a translating app during lessons. I noticed today, she used it less and focused on my instructions and shadowed me in pronunciation. She is making progress though, 2nd lesson, however she really works hard, spends much time practicing what I send as homework..

  • Visual aids like pictures and charts can help convey information regardleas of language barriers. Use simple and clear language, avoid complex vocabulary. Repetition is essential. Use gestures to supplement your speech.

  • I have had some good experiences in this area. We are are private school and the medium of instruction is in English. Although we have some Malay language and Mandarin in the curriculum. When the new school term opens, we have some students from the Public schools where the medium of learning is in Malay, some from Chinese schools where the medium of learning is in Mandarin and some from the Islamic religious schools where they have Arabic. This posed a lot of challenges for me. They were able to speak English but sometimes hard to comprehend. The pronunciation was totally out, there was not intonation, They do not pause at a full-stop and the spelling and writing were way backward. These children will be seated in front so that they have better attention from the board, visuals and the teacher. As all the other children speak English they somehow get accustomed and eventually merge into the system and show some improvement by the end of the term.

Encouraging peer collaboration and providing additional support for non-native speakers can be beneficial. Regular assessments and feedback can help identify students who need extra help. Overall, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment is key to addressing language barriers effectively.
