I guess intonation is part of the natural process of learning and understanding a language. Many things can be "said" just by using the proper intonation and sometimes it facilitates communication. Who never understood what someone meant to say just by the tone used?

Yes, while Iβm no expert on the Italian language, I know that every Italian listener will hear the difference. This could be a barrier to communication at least with some. Maybe the people will understand, but to be accepted into their community, a learner should strive to sound like them. Having said that, Im not sure its where one should start.
