I have a student who mixes up the words ' bought ' and 'brought'.
Any tips on how to correct this or is it a matter of repitition ?

I guess, in this case you should try to create a simple association with those words to show them a difference. Something like: 'At first, you bought it (in the shop) and then you brought it (home).'
Using visual aids will help. Use pictures to shows two scenes; e.g. one person bought a laptop from an electronics store. Then he/she brought the lap top to the class for presentation. Showing the difference in words through sentences instill the meaning differences more appropriately in students' minds.
Help student filling the blank spaces and using different concepts to undrestand the difference between bought and brought.

As Anton stated, creating a scenario for each word would definitely help them know the difference. The way I used to study for exams was through associating a piece of new information with something I am familiar with.
There is a need to understand that bought is associated with buying which is from shop and brought means that bring and the things which is bought from shop is brought to home
I believe it is important to put the verbs in context to help the student differenciate between them. create an out-of-lesson dialogue where these words are used so the student will understand even better. give also examples of words that are similar to these so that he understands that in English many words can be kind of similar in sounds and spelling, and that would help him understand the language and remember whenever he decides to use the words.
brought - normally you would ask someone to bring it for you, so technically you are bothering others and more complicated- so one more R

I would say that allowing the student to use the words in different sentences so they are able to practice how that word is used and when to use it. Fill in the gap games can also help with differentiating and making sure the words are used correctly.
Bought: Past tense of "buy." It means to purchase something. Example: "I bought a new book yesterday." Brought: Past tense of "bring." It means to carry or take something to a place. Example: "She brought her homework to class." You can also ask your students to create sentences with both words. For example I bought a cup of tea and brought it to me the office.
I think you can simplify it by making them aware that BRING has a letter R,then BROUGHT also does, as its past tense. Whereas BUY and its past tense BOUGHT does not have the letter R.
