Ask open questions and keep asking 'why'
Any topic can elicit questions. So talk about it and if the student doesn't come up with them, encourage them to critical thinking by asking them the questions yourself.

I give various subjects after that I want them to articulate what are they thinking about. We have free discussion till we reach a fruitful result.
what i always do is that i use a verb in the sentence and make out a complete sentence using the students name. then i always noticed they understand really quick when i use them as examples then i will ask them to make sentence base on what they have understood about a word or phrase.
I ask follow on questions, to encourage them to think more deeply about a subject. This helps to increase their vocabulary and use of phrases. I ensure they know they have time to think and there is no rush.
Encourage students to reflect on their own thinking by asking them questions such as: What did I understand about this passage?What remains unclear?What questions do I have?How can I improve my understanding of this material?
Without any pressure- it’s the main approach. I can help student by asking questions about the text if he/she finds it really difficult to interpret
