English is a thief. More than 30% of English vocabulary comes directly from French! Words such as "attention", "cuisine" and "table" are very obvious examples, but there are others that are probably not quite so obvious, such as "mansion" which comes from the french word "maison", "palace" from the word "palais"; the list goes ever on! However, the thievery is not just limited to French, here are some common English words that have been taken from other languages: Shampoo (Hindi), Bungalow (Bengali), Kowtow (Mandarin), poppycock (Dutch), kangaroo (Aborigine), armada (Spanish), crescendo (Italian). Again, the list goes ever on. English does not just stop at stealing words. It takes whole phrases for itself, again, mainly from french. These include: "bon voyage", "entre nous", "double entendre", "pied a terre" to name but a few. English doesn't borrow words. It steals them on an industrial scale. Like what you have just read? Why not book a lesson.
