I really enjoy using ENGOO Daily News articles. There is an excellent search function so you can find something that will interest your student at an appropriate level. This is a free resource on the internet.
It depends up to a point on how good is someone in content creation and presentation because whatever the curriculum is, you still have to rearrange it to the student's needs.

The most widespread text book is Roadmap (and mostly I use Pearson publisihng). Students' reviews are great. They say it is up-to-date and effective
It depends on the age of the student or the level. For beginners, I use mostly grammar lessons from my grammar book or from you-tube. For adults, I get the lessons from British Council or a pod-cast for vocabulary lessons.
