The formal name for New Zealand citizens is New Zealander. But because it is too long they use a more casual name KIWI
We are Kiwis. kiwi with a small k is our national bird (NOT kiwibird !!! You don't say duckbird or chickenbird do you?) I have seen kiwifruit called kiwis by ignorant sellers in thre produce section of some supermarkets when travelling and tell them to do better. *We don't sound the same the same as Australians (Aussies) either.
