I saw it in the sentence "He called around to find a good dentist because he had a terrible toothache".

Call around means contacting different people to help get the information you require.
Calling multiple dentists to find the best one to assist him with his toothache.
It means, finding numbers for different dentist, not knowing who they are, what there prices are, so you make calls to each one, that means calling around.
To inquire from place to place or person to person about a specific piece of information.
It means that the person has been calling people or places to try and find information about something.
You can also" call around" to a friends house - a visit.
To look at different options for something you’re looking for. For example - Student says - “I need a good restaurant to go to for dinner tonight” Persons answer - “Let’s call around to find the best restaurant for you”
