"Dark horse" means an unexpected winner. I love to be called as an dark horse by people.
Idioms kind of are like collocations if you ask me, or at least they become that. I like the say when life gives you lemons make lemonade.
My favorite one is " a blessing in disguise "

The first thing to do when teaching conditionals would be to explain what conditionals are, then provide them with examples, then play a game where they need to identify the conditional, and finally have them create their own to see if they understood it
