They are used to show either possession or omission of letters or numbers
An apostrophe ----> ' is used to show someone OWNS someting. Example: Amy's book. This means Amy OWNS the book. The book BELONGS to Amy. An apostrophe ----> ' also shows that a word was made SHORTER Example: It's a cat. It is = It's. the apostrophe takes the place of the missing " i " in the word "is" to make it SHORT.

Apostrophe is use to show possession, to indicate plurals of letter, numbers.
Hi Fred, apostrophe is used to show possessive nouns (example his/her phone). It is also used to show omission of letters (example instead of do not we use don't). We also use it to show plurals (example kittens').
Aside from showing possession, it’s also for contraction of certain words such as it is-it’s.
They are used for omission in order to show where a letter has been left out. E.g. Haven't instead of haven't.
They are also used for possessions: Tom's book; Anna' house; the boys' house (with plural nouns) ; (in grammar this is called Saxon genitive)
They are used for word contraction for example is not will be isn’t. They are also used for personalization for example it’s his pencil. Etc
