Actually, I recently dealt with this in one of my group classes. The youngest student, about 10 years old was noticeably disengaging, drawing on his notes etc. So I changed my technique of practice. Instead of asking questions in rounds where each student answered in turns, I started asking groups of questions to one student at a time. This child received 5 questions back to back that he had to answer. Then when his turn was over I invited him to enjoy drawing a picture for the class while I focused on the next student and their questions. It brought his focus back to me when I needed it and maintained equilibrium innthw virtual classroom
I think is always good to start with attention grabbers and icebreakers, that will determine how will the flow of the lesson is going to be.Or have classroom rules in that way it will be easier to go back and remind them about the rules.
Honestly, this is very common with this generation so the best I will do to call their attention is to start a debate on interesting topics such as football, fashion and just to name a few depending on the age group then when I have their attention I will dive into my lesson right awayš.

I would start singing to steal there attention and silence them, then say, ānow that I have your attention, letās focus back in on the lesson š.ā
I am passionate about attention getters! Depending on the age group repeated phrases or body actions would perfectly function with younger children.
I would be patient with my student and practice more teaching skills to learn in a fun and good way.

I would say, you all can go ahead and speak just tell me when you are finished so I can get on with my job. I'll sit and be quiet.
I will display a video of their favourite song , and ask them to sing along with it.
just keep quite until they are silent
If my students are not paying attention to the lesson, I will use a fun and engaging way to get them interested in what I have to deliver but most importantly with tolerance.
