The popularity of the English language is the result of historical, economic, technological, and cultural factors.
The British from the 15th Century onward thinking that they owned everything outside of Europe would be my guess.
The era of colonization helped to spread the English language across the globe; and as the United Kingdom had many colonies, people in the colonized territories assimilated the English culture and language. Added to this was the fact that some of the colonized countries such as the United States and Canada became very powerful countries in terms of trade, economic power, and political influence, which helped to make English very popular.
