I think homework should be given thoughtfully and purposefully, instead of just assigning it automatically. It's important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of homework and make sure it helps students without burdening them too much.
We can never treat people the same. It strongly depends on: 1. Students, their personal life situation, and their personality. 2. The difficulty of the subject we teach. 3. Our teaching method. . . . In general, do it unless you find a reason not to.
Personally I always left homework to the last minute, rushed through it and therefore didn't really benefit. In fact it probably lowered my motivation. Perhaps better than assigning homework would be to share suggestions and ideas with students on creative ways to practise what they've learned should they want to. That way those who are motivated have fun ways to keep it up, and those who aren't don't have extra stress pulling them down.

It is essential because it reinforces what has been learned in class, but, other people may argue that homework adds stress to an already busy day, takes away from family and leisure time, and can even reinforce bad habits if used incorrectly.

I would say it depends on the student and the lesson. If the student can grasp the lesson during class, I find it unnecessary to give them homework. But, if the student has not yet grasped the lesson, I believe that homework will benefit them and afford them the opportunity to practice some more.
