Effective communication and accurate pronunciation are the key factors that truly matter.
For me personally accent truly matters, it brings you closer to the culture of the language and you somehow can 'touch' or 'feel' it. It's something natural that many people find interesting and perceive it as 'advanced level' of proficiency. Being able to talk in the native regional accent is a real gift and sometimes requires good listening skills and excellent hearing as well as the ability to produce the same sound with your speech apparatus. However when we think in terms of communication and general understanding of the language and its messages, native accent doesn't play the main role. It's just an extra. As we can see in many areas - English is an international language widely spoken by many professionals and as long as they are able to share their information in a clear and understandable way - it's all fine.

I think it's an extra accessory. Whatever your accent is, make sure whatever you are putting across is clear enough for audience to hear and understand.
Yes, accent is important in learning & speaking English because it can affect the clarity of what is been said. The overall effectiveness of communication, e.g pronunciation can be affected by an accent and the message communicated may be misunderstood.
I believe that a particular accent can enhance understanding but it is not crucial for effective communication. Clarity and fluency should be the primary goals in language learning.
A clear accent helps ensure that your message is conveyed accurately and easily understood by others. Makes you more comfortable and willing to engage in conversations.

Accent is good, but pronunciation is very key. It important for one to be able to pronounce words correctly, then little by little get used to a perfect accent.
For me, I stress that the students pronounce the words clearly. We have Asian students from different cultural backgrounds. Especially when they are speaking in a class, they should have either a British or an American accent otherwise students will get confused. Example: The ferry will stop at South end. If it is : The felly will stop at Sau en. The pupils will not comprehend the message.
It is "extra accessory" indeed. Accent is not important. However, pronunciation is important.
