Depends on the student, if they’re willing to learn they shouldn’t be tempted to touch their phones. Try to find out why they might be using the mobile device, ask them if the lesson is interesting for them. Chop and change lesson to suit their liking.
It is very rare, but I have found it to be the case when a student is being forced to take a subject he/she doesn't want to take. Let's face it, there are other subjects that may be far more interesting and useful. Puberty also plays into it as well. I have been an English teacher since 1999. It has been the same in Japan, China and Viet Nam at a specific age group. On the other hand, there is a dangerous addictive quality to social media that should not be ignored. I will post about this on my wall.
I believe if the lesson is interesting meaning using exciting teaching aids, they will surely be engrossed.
