Tough question! Standardized tests are good for measuring a student's overall knowledge base I think, but it really depends on what the test goals are, too - which is just as important. For example, a student might remember 1000 vocabulary words about daily activities, but they don't have the ability to ask for directions. If the standardized tests do not account for this, it could be misleading.
the 'average' student is a myth that requires some busting. Standardised tests put pressure on students and teacher which can cause stress, anxiety and panic. It makes more sense to individually assess each student and track the progress against themselves. There is no one size fits all when it comes to assessment...
Yes,as long as there should be tests.Life is the best test,no testing plan can fully correlate with it.

Start testI believe so. In a school environment all the students are almost at the same level of learning in a class of 25 students of the same age. There are always 5% of students who will do excellently but all the rest will fall in an average standard. The standardized test will give an accurate measure of their performance in school.
In my experience as a university teacher, I have found that standardised tests are great for showing how well the student knows how to do tests. However, I do not believe that they give an accurate picture of how well the student knows, and can think in, English. But that is only my personal opinion.

I think it is an excellent way to measure a student's ability and general knowledge, but I also agree with Teacher Mo that it doesn't measure a student's creativity, emotional intelligence, or other intelligences. I think and the end of the day it depends on what you want to test.
Standardised tests are a really good way of testing for specific knowledge of a student. However, one type of test doesnt suit all students, so unfortunately some learners will find the tests more difficult. The key is finding a teacher or tutor who will adapt their teaching methods to help the student gain the knowledge and then also ensure they understand the way the standardised tests are run. This gives everyone the best chance of sucess!
Yes, it is a excellent way to measure the knowledge of a student.
Standartized tests can be an accurate measure if inly students don't cheat but answer honestly.
It depends on who makes the test. Some tests focus on vocabulary native English speakers don't even use. Or the tests want to hear outdated expressions from text books. I'm working on making my own standardized test that focuses on real everyday English.
it is one of the ways ,It can work for others while others no.
