Yes, definitely so. To start poems with young students can be four sentence poems. For instance, in the 1st and 2nd sentences, the last words of the sentences rhymes with each other; it's the same with the 3rd and 4th sentences. The student can then identify the differences and meaning of the last words, although the different words and spelling of the words, it sound similar to each other. It's a very good way to get the students engaged. It changes the patern a bit of just teaching and learnings phonics as everybody does. It's more interesting to them, and they will, in my opinion, remember the spelling and sounds easier.

Writing poems does this as well as shows and teaches how to write in an organized and structured manner. This helps them have a better critical-intuitive mindset thus growing up with a better vision and understanding of their realities and awareness of the others.
