Although both “him” and “her” are pronouns, you would use the word “his” because it puts a difference on the word so you can differentiate between the two.
Because the first "her" is the object pronoun and the second "her" is the possessive adjective (her book). The possessive pronoun is "hers". The first "him" is the object pronoun as well, but the second "him" is a mistake. The correct possessive adjective is "his" (his book). The possessive pronoun is also "his".
