There are so many materials in the Internet. Sure, it depends on student's needs. I use videos ( you may find many of the in youtube), my own materials, e-textbooks, worksheets from different esl sites. If you need the names of these sites, write me, please, and I will send you a list.

  • How fast, or whether at all, the student will be able to get that big-picture perspective on language will in equal measure depend upon the teacher's skill and the student's motivation to learn. Finally, for those that feel really passionate to dive into the depths of language, no extra help is necessarily needed. They will learn the language studying all on their own. I'm an auto-didact in languages myself, and I can assure you that learning a foreign language on your own is absolutely doable, as long as your motivation is right. A competent teacher can save some time in the process and probably more expertly disentangle fine points of language for the student, but the only person that really counts in acquiring another language is the student himself.

  • The point is to read and listen with intention and focus. They are not supposed to engage in just an "ordinary" reading or listening - they need to do it with purpose. If the topic at hand in class is, say, to-infinitival verb complements, students will be able to discover for themselves how common they are in actual language use. They will not have to read or listen much to discover one, in any context. And this is one of the key premises of my method - the students themselves are in charge of their own learning process, not me. I'm playing only a supporting role in the process. My role is to make the selection of language topics they study orderly, systematic, coherent and directed. Learning anything in this life is all about connecting dots into the big picture. This is probably nowhere as true as in the case of learning a foreign language. And that's also where the teacher's expertise comes into play.

  • I have my own method of teaching language and I have no use for any additional teaching aids or learning materials specifically designed for ESL students. Approaches to teaching/learning a foreign language tend to be wildly divergent, so using random ESL materials will only cause an interference and be a distraction for the student. I use suitable contexts to illustrate points that I make in the class and I encourage students to think them through on their own. What I ask of my students is to think about the points that I introduce in the class and then to explore the vast English language content out there and see for themselves how any specific point is manifested in the real world of language use. In other words my students just need to google for whatever topic or content best suits their interests. The more advanced students can pick a book of their own choice, the less advanced can use graded books. (continued in another post)

  • It all depends on student's needs and how they learn and understand best. I like to use flashcards, videos, my own materials and worksheets that I get from different ESL websites. It's very important to make sure that students understand your different materials. Make sure to go through your material with them and explain to them what everything means.
