The main reason for anxiety when learning a foreign language. Is the fear of negative. Other triggers could be the fear of exams or public speaking.

  • I suppose feeling as though there is an insurmountable amount of information they need to familiarise themselves with and learn is scary. On top of that, they have to actually practice the language in real-life settings which can be challenging when you live in a country where English is not the main medium of communication.

  • The fear of being judged is what hinders people from learning a new language. People usually equate mistakes with being stupid, which is DEFINITELY WRONG. Making mistakes is naturally part of learning. Embrace it, learn from it, and you will go further in your studies.

  • Being anxious for anything not only learning a foreign language is most times not know what to expect if you will be able to do it . So it is okay to be anxious until you can do it. Don't be fearful

  • Being unable to speak the language (after a few lessons). Not understanding grammar adds to it. Morover, limited vocabulary also makes them anxious. Difficult grammatical rules may provoke a feeling that "no , I can't do it".

  • Correction *negative feedback.

  • From my experience students become anxious due to embarassment of making mistakes, taking longer to understand certain points, words and materials and especially mispronouncing words. All of which is okay as all people differ in their ways of learning and that is what it is all about.

  • Every student is different and special. It's the job of the teacher to find out the needs of their private student. Putting them all in one basket defeats the point of private tuition. :-) RejoiceAlways :-)

  • Because it's new! Their fear is not always right because learning a new language is not so hard. Students might fear failure in their foreign language learning journey and We, Teachers, should help them realize that there's no fear in this beautiful journey!
