A clause is a combination of a subject and predicate. Syntax is a study of a clause and its constituents, so there's no short and simple answer as to their classification.
A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate. It functions as a complete thought. It is also a syntactic unit within a sentence. Clauses are the building blocks of sentences. They can be classified into: 1. Independent clauses or main clauses. A main/Independent clause is a clause which can stand alone as a complete sentence. Example, He enjoys walking to school. 2. Dependent clauses/ subordinate clauses: These clauses cannot stand alone as complete sentences. They depend on Independent clauses to form complete thoughts. They function as : Noun clauses: "What we want": stands as the direct object of the verb. Adjective clauses: "The book that I read". This modifies the book. Adverb clause:"since I was writing".This modifies the verb "was writing".
