Are there different sign languages for difference countries and cultures
Hi sue hope you are doing great? Yes, indeed! Just like spoken languages, sign languages also vary across different countries and cultures. Each country or region may have its own distinct sign language or a unique variation of a more widely used sign language. For example, American Sign Language (ASL) is predominantly used in the United States and parts of Canada. British Sign Language (BSL) is used in the United Kingdom, while Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is used in Australia. In addition, there are sign languages specific to countries such as French Sign Language (LSF) in France, Japanese Sign Language (JSL) in Japan, and South African Sign Language (SASL) in South Africa, to name a few. ASL however has a well-developed vocabulary and specific signs related to medical terminology, and day to day conversations so many beginners prefar to go for it since application situations is easy to come by. Hope I have been able to answer your question.
Hi Sue! Yes there are. For example there is American Sign Language (ASL) for North America, British Sign Language (BSL) for the UK and French Sign Language (FSL) for French speaking territories. There are also many cultural variations, in my country we use a slightly altered version of ASL.
