Poetry has been a long and tried tradition on how to teach English, I'd say teaching through songs can have negative effects though especially if a student takes a lesson to heart and remembers it (witch is often the case) because a song writers' number one goal is to make something sound nice, not to say something in a grammatically correct way. There are things like children's songs which are written with that in mind (being structurally and grammatically correct) but on the other hand I don't know too many adults who will enjoy a children's song. I'd say avoid a song entirely unless you can verify a song has no grammatical errors. No easy feat considering most songs have countless mistakes like that though.
I think it is a great idea to learn English through poems and songs. Poems use descriptive language and learning about similes and metaphors are a great way to learn new vocabulary and ideas. Songs also are fun to learn and make room for music and drama as a fun addition to the classroom.
Yes it is a lovely way to engage yourself but its more effective and fun when you understand what you listening to as poetry is sometimes meant to be understood to get the meaning of the poem being played out.
