Teachers can talk about nearly anything to break the ice with their students. Popular ice breaking conversations about who they are, where they come from, what happened over the weekend, what their plans are for the weekend, or what they know about a topic.
Somtimes ask about something random or something silly but if you're in a group conversation trybto choosd more than one topics and then try to combine them together so every person in the group could participate, this is a fun way to practise your brain with coming up with new ideas and yet letting other people relate to the topics your discussing

An ice breaker is usually a joke or doing something funny. eg: Hello Linda, how are you tomorrow?
I always let the student decide, it gives them a chance to "show off" some skills and go with that.

I love talking about sports that you love and can appreciate.
Believe it or not it's not so verbally dependent but if you are cool, relaxed, taking it easy and casual, it will relieve alot of the stress from the student, showing that we are all just people interacting and not in a court room, teachers are just sharing a knowledge with there fellow students!
