To students: What do you do if you don't understand a word in a sentence, how do you figure it out?

you can ask your teacher, friend, family member, or simply if you have an internet facility you can google it.

You could ask the person speaking to rephrase the sentence or question.  

If you don't understand a word in a sentence it can help to use context clues.  Context clues such as the overall message of the sentence, where the sentence is coming from, or the words around the unknown word.

If you are talking with someone you can ask them to describe the word you don't understand. If you are reading something then a translator or dictionary is the best thing to use.
