Start testLearnt and learned are both forms of the past tense and past participle of the verb learn, which means "to gain or acquire knowledge of or skill in something". The only difference between them is where they are used. Learned is the preferred spelling in American English and Canada, while learnt is more common outside North America, especially in British English. However, learned is also accepted in British English, and it is the only appropriate spelling when used as an adjective, pronounced with two syllables12. For example: I learned/learnt how to play chess when I was young.
Both are used for the past tense of learn.
Hi Sue, as I am British, I tend to teach my students British English in the classroom. So i am more biased towards "Learnt". To remain inclusive and attentive towards students goals I also inform them with the differences between the two nations dialogues.
"Learned" is the US English past participle of to learn, while "learnt" is the UK English past participle of the same verb. You can use either.
