Knowing the synonyms for grateful can help people not to confuse it with greatful. The most common one is thankful. The two names tend to have a similar meaning in both sentence or conversation. Other synonyms for grateful include: Indebted Obliged Appreciative

  • When people hear the word "grateful", they can make the assumption that it is somehow connected to the word "great" in some way or other and that "-ful" will somehow enhance the meaning of "great". Another word that is given the same treatment is "fast" with many students assuming that "-ly" should be added when trying to express a stronger meaning. Let us be clear: there are no such words as "Greatful" or "fastly". Such thinking is the result of poor teaching and poor explanation of vocabulary. Grate and great are homophonic (they sound the same but have completely different meanings) which means that the student could fall into what is called "The False Friends Trap".

  • people tend to mistake grateful with greatful which is gramattically wrong
