Is it common to leave a tip in a restaurant in your country? Or for another service, such as a taxi?
I've been working on this topic with my students recently. It's interesting how it differs between countries. In the UK, tips aren't mandatory, but it's common to give a tip of 10% in a restaurant. Many restaurants already include it in the bill, as a service charge, but you can ask them to remove it, if you aren't happy with the service.

In the U.S. it's common to tip 15% or more for good service at a restaurant, but we also typically tip hairdressers, taxi or Uber drivers, manicurists, massage therapists, and bartenders. Most people will give a small tip to people who deliver food as well.
It's not common in my country but I usually leave a tip because these guys are hardworking and educated, working in minimum wages , it's difficult for them to make their ends meet.
It's an ambiguous Question. Some time one feels good by giving tip. But most of the time a person feels that it would be better if he don't give it. It depends on one's own nature. But in reality I think it's good to give tip.

In both the UK and Botswana it is customary to leave a tip at a restaurant of about 10%. Waiters and waitresses are usually low paid, so as a sign of gratitude for good service people give a tip. Tips usually make up most of a waiter's pay. In the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries, a waiter would not be paid by the restaurant, so his income would be entirely made up of the tips he was given by customers.

We have the idea in the UK that there is more of a tipping culture in the U.S. I've heard that you kind of have to leave a tip, rather than it being something optional. Would you say that's true, Louise?
It's interesting to hear how it works in SA, Sue. Is there a typical amount that people tip, or is it more of an individual thing?
