  • I am no luddite, but I am not that optimistic about the future of English if AI gets involved. Technology is always seen through rose-tinted glasses and the advent of AI is no different. The introduction of AI will mean that words can be removed from the English language and meanings changed, and as always is the case politics and politicians will want to "protect" and keep their citizens "safe". Both words are red flags to freedom. Our speech will be regulated and homogenized to perhaps the point of the creation of Orwellian Newspeak, where vocabulary is controlled to such an extent that any creative expression will be almost impossible because we will not have the words to express our real thoughts. While it can be argued that Governments are the guardians of speech and expression, I have one question: who will guard the guards? Be careful of AI.

  • AI will help teachers to improve lessons , teachers can spend more time focusing on the actual content. Also AI gives students more efficient methods than traditional ones to learn a language.

  • While AI offers significant potential for the language learning industry, it's important to note that human interaction and guidance remain crucial for the comprehensive language acquisition. AI can supplement and enhance learning experiences, but it cannot replace the value of human instructors and immersive language practice in real life contexts.

  • The industry will probably benefit but I couldn't say that about the teachers!

  • Excellent question! Looking on the bright side, I hope it will encourage more people to learn and to be more excited about their target languages as they can get their questions answered for free and get some practice in between classes if they have nobody else to talk to. I practice my target language (Japanese) with ChatGPT because I'm not advanced enough yet to converse with another human being. But as soon as I AM advanced enough, I will definitely get a real live teacher because I know I'll learn more when having an actual human interaction that involves emotions, even if those emotions are fear and embarrassment on my part! Emotions and connections help us learn like nothing else, I know that!
