I believe it comes down to student teaching preference and the teacher's teaching style. It is therefore very important that there is a good form communiction between teacher and student to understand which way will be more effective and adapt better to the needs of the student and how they prefer to be taught. That is also a good quality of a teacher: being able to adapt to the student, rather than the other way around.

Start test"You are only as good as your next lesson". You have to make sure that the lessons you give make the student feel good about speaking English. Always give positive feedback, and constructive criticism. Also, take an interest in the student, always ask about something that they have mentioned in past lessons such as : "How did the company golf day go? Was it fun?" It is also advisable to inject some fun into the lesson. When a student is relaxed, feeling confident and knows that the lesson will be fun, they will learn more, and remember what they have learnt.
Allowing students to speak their minds and letting them feel comfortable in learning by making mistakes will surely make them feel safe to be in you the same space as you.
