Hi Aris, Phrases and clauses are some of the divisions which a sentence consists of. They both are group of words which functions together in a sentence, in order to give the reader information, quality, time perspective, action(verb) in a sentence. Sentence: Rodrigo, my brazilian ESL tutor, is from Brazil. Clause: Rodrigo(subject) is(verb) from Brazil(predicate) phrase: my brazilian ESL tutor. A phrase never stands up on its own - they give extra information about the subject but it doesn't make up for a sentence. Roddy

  • phrases and clauses are both groups of words. the main difference between these two is that a clause must have a subject and a verb and it can stands up on its own, but a phrase doesn't contain a verb and subject. example: he is playing in the playground. he is playing: clause in the playground: phrase

A phrase is a group of meaningless words. A phrase doesn't make sense on its own. A clause consist of a subject and verb.

  • Hi Aris! A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, for example: before it rained or the umbrella suddenly broke. A phrase, on the other hand, lacks a subject-verb unit but otherwise functions together. For example: on a rainy day or all of a sudden.
