Why learn the subject, if it is not the core you want to learn, otherwise why bother. You want to master the language and let the language master you.
To learn something and make it stick not just float around in your head like any other random info in there, you have to understand it well. And to do so, you have to know the core of the topic and ensure you get a hold of the basics first. Therefore it is a big yes for me!
