A smile is an expression of happiness that you make with your face and has no sound while laughter is an explosive vocal sound.

Laughing is often unpredictable/ involuntarily and could be due to numerous emotions( e.g. some people may often laugh instead of crying masking negative emotions or as a coping mechanism) whereas smiling is often predictable/ voluntary and almost always connected to happiness.
