There are quite a number of similarities between English and my home language and most of the words which we use are borrowed from the English language. They both have grammatical gender, for example, masculine and feminine nouns. They also both have a (subject. verb, object) word order. There are also similarities in the vocabulary, like the words for numbers and colors.

Yes, there are similarities and also differences depending on the location and family upbringing. Those living in the city and also who have had English education from pre-school are fluent in English. Parents who are educators, doctors and lawyers speak English to their children although they come from different ethnic group. This can't be said for those living in the rural areas. Most of them use their mother tongue especially Bahasa Malaysia (National Language) The schools too do not use English as the medium of teaching. These children and adults do not have an opportunity to speak English as all of them speak in their mother tongue such as Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese or Tamil.
