Hey there! My name is Mariam Melikishvili, I'm from Tbilisi, Georgia, currently studying Psychology, Political Science & International Relations at American University in Bulgaria (AUBG).
Having proficiency level of C2 from British Council, completed trainings at various NGO and international organizations, and about 4 years of working experience with over 300 hours of lessons, I now work as a certified English tutor. Additionally, I am a FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) Alumna of 2023, which is a prestigious scholarship program fully funded by the U.S. Department of State. With the FLEX program, I spent 1 academic year at an American high school in Westerville, Ohio developing my leadership skills and gaining valuable insights into their culture.
Outside of my academic & professional endeavors, I'm a freelance artist, specialized in oil paintings. Running art page on social media with over 1K following and participating in art exhibitions is something I love doing in my free time!
At the beginning of 2020, I started volunteering as an English teacher for students living in rural and economically-damaged areas of Georgia and found my passion for teaching.
After acquiring 100+ hours of experience over the course of a year, I started working as a curriculum and instruction specialist at an International organization called Language Unites Us for both English and Georgian languages. Additionally, I completed English Teaching Training at American Corner Tbilisi, and received certification for C2 proficiency from British Council in 2021.
During my exchange year in the U.S. I was selected for WYLET (Workshop for Youth Leaders in English Teaching) a prestigious, week-long training in Washington D.C. where I gained valuable insights from highly experienced professionals in this field.
Nowadays, I teach English as a second language on various online platforms, as well as in person with all age groups and proficiency levels.
As someone who has had 10+ years of experience with language learning and apart from English and Georgian, has studied Russian, Italian and Spanish, I can fully emphasize with my students when it comes to learning. I believe in separating grammar from vocabulary lessons to ensure efficiency and full-comprehension, as well as having listening, reading, and writing practices. Language learning should never feel like a chore. This is why I often include art, culture, history, film and literature in my course materials. My students and I enjoy having discussions with one another about these topics. We play educational games, practice with flashcards, and gain new vocabulary from listening to songs or translating subtitles from a show! As a psychology major and a peer counselor at AUBG, I believe in the benefits of eliminating psychological factors like fear of making mistakes or pronunciation insecurities while speaking in a new language, and I help my students overcome these challenges!
