I'm from Washington D.C., but I have been living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. for the past 10 years. I've been teaching English both online and offline since the year 2000. I began my career as a freelance, one-on-one English teacher in Istanbul where I helped business owners, corporate employees, and University students improve their English language skills.
I've since taught adults and children in a variety of settings including classrooms and online. I'm married with no children, but have a wonderful dog named Sheila. Some of my past times include: disc golf, going to the gym, meditation, reading, podcasts, and hiking. I've done extensive travel in several countries and love to learn about people and their unique lives.
I have been an English Language Coach with Learn Light for the last 10 years where I conduct conversational sessions for students in multinational companies. Along with teaching adults online, I also provide classes for children and have taught in the classroom setting in Seoul, Korea, and Istanbul, Turkey. My University degree is in Education from Towson University and I am a certified, Maryland k-12 grade teacher. Upon graduation, I chose to teach English in Korea instead of working in the U.S. It was in the classrooms of Seoul where I learned to motivate children to learn English in a fun and engaging way. After 2 years in Korea, I moved to Thailand where I have been an English coach for employees of multinational companies such as Coca-Cola, Siemens Gamesa, Deutsche Telecom, Ericsson Global, and more.
My teaching style is based on a communicative approach, which means I focus on prompting you to speak as much as possible on various topics. At times, I use real-life situations and role-play for practice while at other times I encourage free-flowing conversations. There may be occasions when I ask you to read a bit about a topic to encourage conversation about a topic you may not be used to. In either case, I'll regularly help you with grammar and pronunciation and introduce new words and phrases for you to use. After 10 years of online teaching, I've gotten quite good at finding the balance between letting you talk freely and interrupting to correct mistakes. If you prefer more or less interruptions, please let me know. Also, I feel very comfortable talking about just any topic and can find a way to keep the conversation going smoothly.
I'll tailor our lessons to your interests, needs, and how you learn best.
