English has two types of grammar. The grammar for written English is called "prescriptive grammar," and it is the grammar that you learn at school or in any traditional English language teaching lesson. To try and speak using "prescriptive grammar" will make you speak slowly, woodenly and you will sound like an official letter from "The Ministry of Education". In fact more often than not, Prescriptive grammar will stop you from speaking! Spoken English uses "descriptive grammar" which is different, and allows you to use contractions, different pronouns and different word order for prepositions. It takes a little bit of time to undo the "prescriptive grammar " that bas been drilled into you and replace it with "descriptive grammar". To speak natural spoken English it is vital that you do so. So how do you learn "descriptive grammar"? Start speaking to native speakers. So, grammar is needed for spoken English, but the right one! Like what you have just read? why not book a lesson.
