Hi My name is Mercedy, but you can call me teacher Cedy. I am a third year student teacher at the IIE Rosebank College in South Africa. I love working with kids and it has always been my dream and passion. As an ESL teacher, I focus on creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. I emphasize communicative practices, integrating listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. I adapt lessons to meet diverse student needs, using real-life contexts to make learning relevant. Additionally, I incorporate technology and cultural elements to enhance understanding and encourage interaction. My experience as an student teacher has been both rewarding and challenging. I’ve worked with diverse groups, adapting lessons to various language levels and cultural backgrounds 🌍 Engaging students through interactive activities and real-world scenarios has been key to enhancing their learning. 📚 I’ve witnessed ultimate growth in their confidence and communication skills, which has been the most fulfilling part of the job🙂 Each class brings new insights, making the journey continually interesting🎓🧑‍🏫. I've also learned the importance of building a supportive classroom environment. 📚 Encouraging risk-taking and fostering a sense of community helps students feel comfortable practicing their language skills.🏆🧑‍🏫🎓 The lessons have clear objectives that define what the students will learn and be able to do the end of the session. To engage students, I start with a warm-up activity that involves them and the teacher. During the teaching stage I normally introduce new vocabulary, the students and teacher spell the new words using visual aids such as flash cards. I believe this helps students see the word, and helps them read the word. I explain each term clearly and provide examples in context. Next, I guide students through controlled practice activities where they use the new vocabulary in structured sentences. This might include fill-in-the-blank exercises or matching words with pictures. Students will also engage in more open-ended activities where they can use the vocabulary freely, this encourages and allows them to practice speaking speaking in a less structured environment. At the end of a lesson, I conduct a quick review session where students summarize what they learnt about the topic🏆
