Hi. I am from Seychelles. We have 3 national languages, that are Creole, English and French. I speak and write all 3 languages and I am eager to share what i know. Teaching is a way of sharing that brings joy to me.
I worked as a Primary School Teacher in Seychelles for 3 years from 2018 to 2021. Prior to that my main work experience has been in the financial sector, specifically as a Policy maker working with the Seychelles Central Bank for 9 years.
I love to write and for my 40th birthday i published a book of 40 poems titled 40 years by Ritah. The book allowed me to share my life's journey and reach out to touch others. Teaching is another way that allows one to reach out to and connect with others that is essential to one's wellbeing. I enjoy teaching as it is learning in itself, each encounter is an opportunity to meet a new and unique being, I enjoy discovering new characters and the challenge of finding the best way to teach by being responsive to the others uniqueness.
I worked as a Primary School Teacher at the Beau-Vallon Primary School in Seychelles for 3 years from March 2018 to December 2021. I taught Primary 3 to Primary 6. Over the 3 years I taught Creole, English, Mathematics, Science, Personal & Social Education and Spiritual studies.
It was a challenging and fulfilling experience as I delved into i) research on subject topics and teaching ii) lesson plan preparation and lesson delivery tailored to different student groups iii) preparation and review of Homeworks iv) preparation of assessment as well as exam papers and grading same v) documenting of progress (both students and my own) vi) giving feedback to students, parents and superiors vi) ensuring a conducive classroom and loving space for students.
The experience took my organisation, communication skill and understanding of teaching to a new level as I quickly understood that teaching encompasses a vast array of skills, responsibilities and mostly the need to be a learner always.
I have learnt that the way one teaches cannot be static, rather it has to be responsive to the client. An important part of my lesson is to understand who my student is, what he/she likes and his/her aspirations. Hence, as we establish what the learning goals of a student is, I concurrently question to get a feel of the student's character. So, whilst preparing and engaging on set goals I can use materials and methods that are engaging to the student.
Learning should be intentional, so I prefer a more student-centered approach by creating space for a student to express. This allows the student to also develop and apply soft skills e.g. communication and problem solving that are vital to breeding a life-long learning mentality.
Giving feedback both from the teacher and student start early on as it is essential to ensuring that we are on track to reaching the set goals. Based on progress tracking I will then adjust the approach accordingly e.g. more formal authority teaching style.
